In 2017, Greg signed up for Spanish lessons to prepare for traveling to Latin America. That same year, Hazel immigrated to the United States from El Salvador, accepted a job teaching Spanish, and was assigned as Greg's teacher. For the next two years, they spent Thursday afternoons talking about their home countries, cultures, and life experiences in Spanish — well, mostly Spanish.

Speaking Spanish was (and continues to be) a struggle for Greg, but Hazel always made it fun. And somehow, in the middle of all the off-topic chatting, they found a genuine connection, but they would not realize that until later.

En 2017, Greg se inscribió en clases de español para prepararse para viajar a Latinoamérica. Ese mismo año, Hazel emigró de El Salvador a Estados Unidos, aceptó un trabajo como maestra de español y fue asignada como la maestra de Greg. Durante los siguientes dos años, pasaron las tardes de los jueves hablando sobre sus países, culturas y experiencias de vida en español — bueno, en su mayoría en español.

Hablar español fue (y sigue siendo) un reto para Greg, pero Hazel siempre hizo que fuera divertido. Y de alguna manera, en medio de tantas conversaciones fuera de tema, encontraron una conexión genuina, aunque no se darían cuenta de ello hasta más tarde.

After years of hearing about this little country called El Salvador, in December of 2019, Greg decided he had to go see it for himself. Coincidentally, perhaps, Hazel would visit El Salvador during that time and they made plans to connect when she arrived. Greg expected to meet for coffee, but Hazel had more ambitious plans to show off her country.

Hazel invited Greg to join her and her friends on an overnight trip to the Volcan de Conchagua. In true Salvadoran fashion, they hitched a ride to the top in the back of a truck, then set up camp and spent all night talking under a sky full of stars. They woke at sunrise to the breathtaking view known as El Espíritu de la Montaña, then spent the afternoon at Playa El Cuco.

At this point it was difficult to define their relationship, but it was more than just teacher and student.

Hazel and Greg spent the next several years getting to know each other better as friends. Their 1 hour plus Spanish classes were replaced by 4 hour plus conversations at Starbucks. Time made Hazel and Greg realize they had an authentic connection.

One afternoon in January of 2022, they bought a used bike for Hazel from a local shop and went to a park to practice riding. It was Hazel's first time riding a bike in a long time. It was nerve-racking at first but so much fun, and she did great!

Taking a break from the riding and laughter, while sitting on a bench in the park, they decided to make their relationship official.

Hazel y Greg pasaron los siguientes años conociéndose mejor como amigos. Sus clases de español de más de una hora fueron reemplazadas por conversaciones de más de cuatro horas en Starbucks. Con el tiempo, ambos se dieron cuenta de que tenían una conexión auténtica.

Una tarde de enero de 2022, compraron una bicicleta usada para Hazel en una tienda local y fueron a un parque para practicar. Era la primera vez de Hazel andando en bicicleta desde hace mucho tiempo. Al principio fue un poco estresante, pero muy divertido, ¡y lo hizo muy bien!

Durante una pausa entre las risas y los paseos, sentados en una banca del parque, decidieron hacer oficial su relación.

Finally a couple, they began traveling to the places they had been talking about for years. They explored cities, hiked mountains, walked beaches, went to concerts, but the thing that brought them the most joy was sharing the experiences together. During a layover on their first international trip, they got so caught up in conversation that they missed their connection and ended up stuck in Seattle for a day. That day turned into one of their favorite memories.

In Wichita, they spent time together with family, going on kombucha dates, collaborating on projects, riding bikes, petting the cows, and watching Greg's nieces and nephews play sports.

Finalmente como pareja, comenzaron a viajar a los lugares de los que habían hablado durante años. Exploraron ciudades, subieron montañas, caminaron por playas, fueron a conciertos, pero lo que más alegría les dio fue compartir todas esas experiencias juntos. Durante una escala en su primer viaje internacional, se distrajeron tanto conversando que perdieron su conexión y terminaron atrapados en Seattle por un día. Ese día se convirtió en uno de sus recuerdos favoritos.

En Wichita, pasaron tiempo junto a sus familias, saliendo a tomar kombucha, colaborando en proyectos, andando en bicicletas, acariciando a las vacas y viendo a los sobrinos de Greg jugar deportes.

In July of 2024, they flew to Portland, Oregon and took off on a road trip to California. Along the way they explored waterfalls, camped at Crater Lake, and hiked through Redwood forests.

On the northern coast of California, all alone on a beautiful hiking trail called Fern Canyon Loop Trail, Greg got down on one knee and asked Hazel to marry him. She said ¡SÍ! At the end of the trail, with the whole beach to themselves, they sat and watched the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. It was the perfect day.

En julio de 2024, volaron a Portland, Oregón y emprendieron un viaje por carretera a California. En el camino exploraron cascadas, acamparon en Crater Lake y caminaron por los bosques de secuoyas.

En la costa norte de California, completamente solos en un hermoso sendero llamado Fern Canyon Loop Trail, Greg se arrodilló y le pidió a Hazel que se casara con él. Ella dijo ¡SÍ! Al final del sendero, con toda la playa para ellos solos, se sentaron y vieron el atardecer en el Océano Pacífico. Fue el día perfecto.
